Te Rau Aroha - About Page
Ko wai mātou?
Te Rau Aroha Inc. was founded in 2024 in Logan, Queensland, under the guidance of our koeke and the support of our hāhi, Te Rau Oriwa. What began as a small kaupapa to reconnect our tamariki to their culture has quickly grown into a thriving kapa haka rōpū, becoming a powerful feeder of kaihaka into competitive pakeke rōpū performing on the Te Matatini stage, grounded in strong values and a clear vision for the future.
History of the roopu:
Te Rau Aroha Inc. was born out of a need for our tamariki and rangatahi living in Australia to feel connected to their culture, their language, and their identity.
Starting with a small group of committed whānau, our rōpū has grown rapidly, now supporting over 100+ members. Through performances, wānanga, noho, and national-level aspirations, Te Rau Aroha has become a strong cultural pillar within our community. Through this journey, we have also built pathways and opportunities that have enabled many of our rangatahi to represent Australia on the kapa haka stage, both nationally and internationally.
Our Kaupapa and Values:
Our kaupapa is grounded in:
- Aroha – leading with love and care for one another
- Manaakitanga – uplifting and supporting our people
- Kotahitanga – standing united as one
- Whanaungatanga – building strong relationships and connections
These values guide everything we do — from how we train, to how we represent ourselves, to how we support each other as whānau.
Our Vision for Tamariki and Rangatahi:
Our vision is to develop confident, capable, and culturally grounded young leaders.
We aim to:
- Strengthen identity through Te Reo Māori and tikanga
- Build discipline, commitment, and excellence through kapa haka
- Create pathways to national and international opportunities
- Connect our rangatahi to established educational pathways in Aotearoa through trusted partnerships, scholarships, and exchange opportunities
- Support positive outcomes in education, wellbeing and leadership
- Develop strong, skilled kaihaka who are capable of being selected to stand in pakeke rōpū at Te Matatini level
We are not just building performers – we are building future leaders.
Our vision is for our rangatahi to confidently walk in both worlds — grounded in their identity, equipped with real opportunities, and prepared to perform and lead at the highest levels of kapa haka.
